Overview

Already connected with some people you don’t want to contact via LGM? No worries, there are two ways to exclude them from your audience or adapt your sequence to their LinkedIn status.

Key benefits

  • No awkward automation with leads you already know.

  • Natural sequences for existing connections.

  • Flexible options: Exclude upfront (LinkedIn) or directly within LGM.

What happens if I send a connection request to someone I’m already connected with?

LGM works seamlessly with all levels of LinkedIn connections. When performing an Add Contact, here’s what happens:

  1. If there’s an invitation pending, LGM detects it and waits for the usual acceptance period.

  2. If you’re already connected, LGM automatically detects it and moves on to the next step in "When Accept Request".

Important:
The default sequence logic works just fine.
However, copywriting issues can arise if you're not careful.

Scenarios that can cause issues

  • If your note contains a message: It won’t be sent if you’re already connected.

  • If your follow-up message refers to your note, but the note wasn’t sent.

  • If you say “Thank you for the acceptance” when you’ve already connected or had a conversation in the past.

Tip: To avoid these issues, use custom sequences and create a specific path using an Is a contact condition.

Option 1 — Exclude people during your LinkedIn search

LinkedIn Basic

Select only 2nd and 3rd degree connections.

Sales Navigator

Use filters to exclude people you’re already connected with.

Option 2 — Exclude or adapt within your LGM sequence

Available with Pro and Ultimate plans

Custom sequences let you adjust your sequence if the prospect is already a contact.

Use the Is a contact condition to create a specific path.

Two options:

Option A — Write a message that fits the situation

By using the "Is a contact" block, you can then send a message to your connections that:

  • Doesn’t mention the connection acceptance

  • Doesn’t refer to an unsent note

  • Fits naturally with the existing relationship

Option B — Handle the lead manually

You can decide to manage this lead manually based on the relationship history. In this example, we are adding leads we're already connected to in another audience:

Important to know

  • The Is a relation / Is a contact condition is part of custom sequences, available only on the Pro and Ultimate plans.

  • If you want to learn more about these plans, feel free to contact us — we’d be happy to discuss them.

FAQs

Is it a problem if I send a connection request to someone I’m already connected with?

No. LGM detects the status and skips that step. The only risk is with copywriting.

How can I avoid sending an inappropriate message?

By using custom sequences or excluding already connected people before importing your audience.

Can I automatically exclude all my LinkedIn connections?

Yes, by filtering your LinkedIn search to 2nd and 3rd degree connections or by using conditions within LGM.

Is the “Is a contact” condition available on all plans?

No, it’s only available on Pro and Ultimate plans (except for the Social Warming template).
